British rapper Little Simz is rare, too rare. Saturday June 3, she will give her only concert in France at the We Love Green festival, which will be held from June 2 to 4 in Vincennes (Val-de-Marne). The first major festival in Ile-de-France to open the 2023 summer season, the event aims to be at the forefront of urban and electronic music, and committed to environmental issues. Last year, it had been seriously amputated in its programming because of the storms that had hit the site. This year, the good weather is there as well as the distinguished guests. Little Simz is one of them.
Real name Simbiatu Ajikawo, Little Simz, 29, took it all in 2022 in the UK with his third album, Sometimes, I Might Be Introverted : four Brit Awards including that of best artist, as well as the prestigious Mercury Prize. She is also one of the main actresses of the series. top boy broadcast on Netflix, of which she has just shot the last season before publishing a new disc, No Thank You, just as well orchestrated as the previous one, where she displayed her artistic independence. Despite everything, she is rare in the media, where she grants few interviews, as in concert. Little Simz preserves itself.
Sitting quietly in her London home, she looks back on the postponement of her American tour last year to avoid a “burn-out”: “I don’t think it would have been the best time for me, she confides. I really needed a break. Better to listen to each other: if I collapse, all my projects also collapse. » Then she relativizes: “Going on tour is not a painful experience. It’s obviously fun. Most artists dream of being able to travel around the world, but if you’re not well anchored in reality, it can be dangerous… For my part, what I need is to feel my family around me, to feel safe and protected. Doing a one-and-a-half-hour concert is very physical and stressful. So it is better to have a good mind. On tour, artists are a bit like athletes. »
Honesty and independence

The rapper partly recorded her new album in several Parisian studios, working here with a symphony orchestra, there with a quartet or Brazilian percussionists who can be heard on tracks like Silhouette or X. Since the beginning of her career, she has worked with the same producer, Inflo “I am very inspired by everyone I work with, she explains, by the musicians who provoke emotions in me, but that does not mean that there is no plan, no vision. With Inflo, we experiment: I add Brazilian drummers, I remove the vocals, I keep the choir in such and such a part… We don’t stop the music just because it only has to last three minutes to be able to broadcast it at the radio. »
